There was so much confusion
surrounding why we had to enter the beginning of a potentially very devastating
situation. When we 1st entered into the shutdown, it took many of us
by surprise because we knew this could possibly happen but did not think they (the
GOP) would really do such a thing to the American people. However, they
did...but why? According to the media, this was a game for the GOP to stop
ObamaCare. Really? I was completely shocked...there was even a video that went
viral with 2 of the GOP representatives plotting on how they were going to try
to hold out and make it look like they wanted to compromise for the sake of the
American people in order to hold out a little longer because they just knew
they were so close to “win”.....so this really is a game to you?
I was
shocked and completely upset, because I was very worried that if they don’t
stop playing, our state WIC program would be closed down as well and I would be
out of a job until additional funded gets approved. I think this was a very
stupid move for the GOP to make and they will pay when re-election time comes for
reach of them...even the ones that wanted to speak up but didn’t. I totally get
the fact that we need to find ways to get out of debt and try to phase out of government
assistance programs because we really cannot afford to keep them running without
going deeper and deeper into debt. However, to furlough hardworking Americans
to prove a point and drag it out to very end is saddening and surely that was
not the only option.
I agree that the shutdown was a travesty, and that we need to be aware of our national debt and try to make a good dent into it. However, surely you're not advocating for the diminishment of the WIC program, are you? I would think that we would have more than enough funding available to help those of us in need if we took a serious look at cutting our defense budget. What do you think? Nice post :)
ReplyDeleteI am a huge advocate for the WIC program...I work for WIC so if there is no WIC, there is no job for me :( I definitely think many families would suffer without the nutrition and breastfeeding education and food voucher assistance they receive from the WIC program.

I agree that this overall move by the GOP was extremely childish and unwarranted. I understand there were disagreements but compromise is essential especially when the lives of MILLIONS of people that YOU REPRESENT are tangled within the mess you have created in Congress. Ultimately, they still received their paychecks so it was if they could give two flips about those suffering. They affected many peoples lives and cost the country millions of dollars which evidently we DON'T have if were trying to raise the debt ceiling. None of it made the least bit of sense. Media coverage of this issue focused so much on the political banter of everything also which was saddening. Informing and Educating should have been the big issue with media coverage opposed to "who said what." I think it is horrible how that situation went down and I am glad it has turned around. Now what hurts is that we finally have approval for the ACA and we can't get a legitimite website running to support the millions we sold that hope to.
